History of onions
Though onions have been cultivated for over 5,000 years, people all over the world dispute the exact origins of onions due to the lack of physical trace evidence. When the pilgrims first arrived in North America on the Mayflower, they brought onions with them to be a garden crop, not knowing Native Americans had already been consuming onion varieties for hundreds of years, as it was grown in the wild.
Before Europeans arrived in America, wild onions were either cooked, consumed raw, or used as a seasoning. Native Americans also used onions in syrups and as an ingredient in dye.
