Where are onions cultivated?

Onion varieties are grown across the world, in the United States, the top three onion producing areas are California, Idaho-Eastern Oregon and Washington. We grow our onions in three diversified growing regions in California: the Imperial Valley, San Joaquin Valley and Tulelake.

Through AtSource, our Sustainability insights platform, customers can see that we have full supply chain control of our operations and offer full-traceability, from our proprietary seed breeding to our state-of-the-art processing facilities.

History of onions

Though onions have been cultivated for over 5,000 years, people all over the world dispute the exact origins of onions due to the lack of physical trace evidence. When the pilgrims first arrived in North America on the Mayflower, they brought onions with them to be a garden crop, not knowing Native Americans had already been consuming onion varieties for hundreds of years, as it was grown in the wild.

Before Europeans arrived in America, wild onions were either cooked, consumed raw, or used as a seasoning. Native Americans also used onions in syrups and as an ingredient in dye.

Uses for sliced onions

Sliced onions are versatile and can encourage maximum creativity when conceptualizing new dishes or food products. Onion slices add bold flavor and texture to dips, condiments, sauces, and soups. They also provide a satisfying bite in casseroles, pasta dishes, sandwiches, and more.
