History of organic spices
Humans have been using spices for hundreds of years for both medicinal and culinary purposes, with records dating back to prehistoric times. From the Neolithic period to the Silk Road, cultures across Asia, Africa, and Europe have used organic spices to enhance their food’s taste, color, aroma, and more.
While herbs and spices were cultivated for many centuries without the use of pesticides, the use of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides has become one of many modern farming practices. This has jumpstarted initiatives over the past few decades to produce organic spices and herbs. At Olam, we strictly adhere to all organic certification requirements at the field and processing level. In addition to growing in the U.S., where the regulations are some of the most stringent in the world, our bulk organic spices are also CCOF and USDA organic certified.
