Spice Up Breakfast With These Trending Dishes

Jan 2019

Breakfast.

It truly is the most important meal of the day.

But what if we told you that breakfast is not just limited to the morning, but is in fact trending during other times of the day?

Consumers are now gravitating towards breakfast being readily available around the clock. Think breakfast for dinner.

Innovative dishes that embrace all sorts of flavor combinations—global/ethnic street-food, veg-centric, and bold beverages—are appearing on menus throughout the majority of commercial segments.

According to our Corporate Research and Development Chef Jill Houk, these are the hottest breakfast trends that companies can really capitalize on in 2019.

First, because breakfast is not just a morning item, you can implement an egg and sausage sandwich one of two ways.

For an early morning breakfast sandwich, you may want to go a little lighter on the spices. However, if you are going to enjoy that same egg and sausage sandwich in the late afternoon or early evening. you’re going to want it to be bold, and packed full of flavor.

This is the perfect opportunity to throw in some high heat capsicums, black pepper, onion, and of course garlic!

In addition to afternoon breakfast, breakfast can also be ethnic.

Think breakfast tacos with cumin, ancho pasilla and jalapeno; Asian soup flavored with ginger, garlic and onion; or Indian dosa’s with spicy gravies that contain turmeric, ginger, garlic, ground red pepper, coriander, cumin and cinnamon.

Spicy and sweet is a huge breakfast trend right now with honeys, jams and syrups being infused with cayenne, jalapeno, crushed red pepper and a pinch of garlic.

Just remember, the garlic should not be detectable on their palate, but having even just a pinch there will help meld the spicy and sweet.

With more and more consumers looking for vegan options in the kitchen, it’s no wonder that plant-based proteins are all the rage right now!

Many strong “eggs” get their rich yellow hue from naturally vibrant turmeric. Add that with a vegan sausage cooked in garlic, black pepper, sage and crushed red pepper and your breakfast is sure to be a huge knockout.

Lastly, to capitalize on those consumers who do not have time to cook breakfast or prefer a liquid substitute, spice it up by having them indulge in a bold breakfast beverage.

Hot chocolate with cinnamon and ancho or golden milk (milk with turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper and cinnamon) are great decaf beverage options. The buzz of the spices are sure to kick their body into high gear so they are awake and feeling focused.

For those who still want some coffee in their life, try adding creamers or whipping up a quick latte with the addition of capsicums, black pepper, cardamom, turmeric and ginger.

These are natural extensions of chai masala and the pumpkin spice craze!

There you have it! These are some of the top breakfast trends for 2019 that are sure to pack a punch and get consumers excited about breakfast again.
